Why change the name?
According to the government officials of Türkiye, there are two major reasons of the reband:
1. When people Google turkey, the bird for Christmas and Thanksgiving always shows up before the country, and that really annoys president Erdoğan.
2. The word turkey is defined in the dictionaries as a stupid or silly person, which is also not good for the image of the country.
Since when has Turkey become Türkiye?
The decision to rename the country was announced by president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in December 2021, and the United Nations (UN) has accepted a formal request from the country in June 2022.
